How garage door motors work

The opener on your ceiling is a small electric motor that drives a trolley along a rail using a chain, belt, or screw drive. Wall-mounted jackshaft openers do the same job from the side of the door by turning the torsion bar directly. The motor does surprisingly little lifting: a balanced spring system carries the weight, and the opener mostly guides the door and controls its speed.

Two settings keep the system safe. Travel limits tell the motor exactly where open and closed are, and force settings decide how much resistance the door can meet before it stops and reverses. Photo-eye sensors near the floor add a second layer of protection, reversing the door the moment anything crosses the beam.

When an opener hums, clicks, grinds, or reverses for no reason, the cause can be a worn gear, a failing capacitor, misadjusted limits, or a door that has fallen out of balance. We diagnose the whole system, not just the motor, so the actual cause gets fixed the first time.
